I found the ending lacking, and wanted to have a backstory to Genevieve and Nicolas' encounters to expand on the reasons for the original commission. But I enjoyed the characters and found them to be rich, primarily those in Brussels. Just a shame that this couldn't have been fleshed out a little more.

I think I enjoyed this because I was just viewing the unicorn tapestries last week. But I also found the whole process of how a tapestry was made intriguing.
I listened to the audio version of this book and I really enjoyed it. The narrator was excellent. The characters were well developed and the time period was interesting and well represented.
Good book, I would read more by her without hesitation.

The Lady and the Unicorn is sometimes quietly beautiful but the rest of the time it worked hard to piss me off. I hated the characters of Nicholas and Claude, found them utterly insufferable – each time I hoped that the narrative would make them better people or wake up to each other. Claude spends so long wanting to bang Nicholas and I’m like ‘oh, when she finds out he knocked up that maid whose life was subsequently ruined, she might realise he’s a scoundrel’ but no, she just begins to hate the maid. The first chapters read like a parody of those “male authors writing female characters” or “male author writing with his hands down his pants” because Claude was like “my breasts breastily breasted and my nipples nipply nippled against my gown” and talked about her “maidenhead” so much that I never want to see the word again. Also it hit on one my petty little squicks in fiction, in which we may assume that the characters are speaking French that has been translated into English by the author, but we still have to sprinkle liberal bits of French into the dialogue just in case you forget.
Was very intrigued with this story and the information that was in it. This was a beautiful story.
Not quite what I expected in terms of unicorns. A surprisingly rich story considering its length (less than 250 pages). The epilogue takes away a little, but is short enough to not be painful (unlike the last Harry Potter book, ugh).
Got this at the lovely Festival of Books! It’s not really that great of a book – a few of the main characters pretty much crave sex as their only goal in life and the phrases used to describe the act and desire are quite silly. And as far as historical fiction goes, there’s really not too much history to speak of; it’s more about salacious scandals. It’s fine.
But really, what this book meant to me was the celebratory first fun book of the summer. That, and the reminder of the gorgeous Musée de Cluny off the Boulevard St-Michel, one of my two favorites in Paris, where the five tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn hang in a stunning display.
I think maybe it’s not just that I miss Paris, but that I miss traveling and being able to wake up and say, I’m going to go there, and then go.
