Wow, this really did not go where I was expecting! I am giving it 4.25 stars since Junji Ito is a master, and it was definitely a thoughtful, incredibly creative story. However, there are some images from this book that I do wish I take a magic eraser to my brain, and not remember those parts, haha. You definitely need to have a high tolerance for body horror to digest some of Ito's work!

Disturbing, gory, gruesome. This was a perfect read for book club because each chapter was more disturbing than the last and we all needed to check-in with each other, like, did I just see what I saw 😵‍💫

The body horror in this was extremely disturbing and I would proceed with caution while reading. We ended up reading 5 chapters/week, which was good because I needed that space to process each section.

Overall, another 5⭐️ winner from Junji Ito. I thought there was an interesting combination of cosmic horror and socio-political commentary. And each chapter packed a punch! I will not be the same after reading this one—the spirals will haunt me.

Damn, Kirie went through some whirlwind.

No, but honestly, Junji Ito is one incredible mastermind. Can't describe it in any other way than Uzumaki is a masterpiece. I will be thinking about this ages upon ages.

I am sometimes worried of the Author's well being though. His imagination is something completely perplexing I wonder if he's doing okay.

Incredible art, stories inconsistent. I liked the beginning a lot more than the final arc, though the reveal in the final chapters was effective.
Very Lovecraft

I really enjoy the format of episodic short horror fiction set in a consistent world. A rotating cast of characters let's you show how terror/hauntings manifests in different ways without having to keep a protagonist around to see the end. It can be more horrifying, the characters more helpless. And you can slowly introduce elements that connect events which build a sense of overwhelming odds in the reader. The best of the stories in Uzumaki did that.

Other elements successfully evoked profound discomfort.
Body horror/transmogrification/cannibalism
These aren't my preferred style of horror media, but I guess there need to be stakes? And it made for highly imaginative and expressive illustrations.

First Junji Ito manga. Love his art style, and how he comes up with this stuff is beyond me.

Side note: me personally, I would’ve left that town two chapters in.

I'll never feel the same about spirals ever again. I'm disturbed, disgusted, traumatised, yet I'd re-read all this in a heartbeat. This was unlike anything I've ever read, even the previous works of Ito were not as good, because as talented as he is at writing short stories, nothing beats an epic of 650 pages! Wow. Just wow.

Soooo…. This is the epitome of nightmare fuel. Graphic, terrifying, and highly unsettling. Many disturbing images and stories. Definitely a work of art in its own right. Took this monster down in one sitting. May have to… spiral back at some point 😏 Also, will never look at spirals the same way again. 🌀

Cosmic horror, Lovecraftian vibes for sure. It sorta reminded me of that movie “23” but with spirals.

I liked the episodic feel to it and I liked that, even with a lot of individual stories, there was a through line and callbacks that led to a larger, cohesive story and ending. That being said, surprised our main characters didn’t get the heck out of dodge much, MUCH sooner when it was still possible (which I think it was at one point as it’s mentioned many people have left the town).

The ending is definitely a bit of a downer.
