Questo libro non è solo la storia di una famiglia, ma l'essenza di quella famiglia, è l'ammontare di tutte quelle cose che la rendono speciale, unica. L'idea che ogni famiglia abbia un suo "lessico" è bellissima proprio perchè è vera anche se non ovvia. Il lessico famigliare sono quelle sfumature, quelle abitudini, quei modi di dire, di fare che ogni membro ha, proprio le cose che rimarranno per sempre dentro di noi e che forse replicheremo quando ci creeremo una famiglia a nostra volta.
Some really wonderful portraits of the people in her life, and there’s a section where she writes about the post-war desire for poetry and her mother’s relationship to people and place that was stunning. Read this in italian so I didn’t get everything but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Not my usual thing. Enjoyed it nonetheless as a light holiday read. Definitely left with a huge fondness for each character. Think this would have been better/I would have given it a higher rating if I had a better understanding of Italian political history & I was reading this in Italian and could enjoy the slang/linguistic informality.

Here's the issue: I can fully understand why people would love this book but I don't. It has down-to-earth people depicted as caricatures while still being real. It's like sitting with someone, flipping through a photo album, and hearing all the stories about all the people in the pictures. I can understand why someone would love that, but personally I do not. There's no sense of the timing of when events happen, just a general before/during/after WW2. I was uncomfortable with how often the father would be "flying into a rage" but equally that line got so boring from how many times it happened; I understand that's probably the aim of the repetition but it just didn't work for me.
