I appreciated the diversity in the cast of characters. The story seemed a little cheesey at times, but I also appreciated the author's effort to portray professionally successful main characters of color.

Bratz Readathon 2020

I was actually really excited to read this, especially after I saw that the synopsis compared it toThe Kiss Quotient and Jane the Virgin, both of which I really enjoyed, yet I could barely even finish this book.

Let me start by saying that I really like the concept and idea of this story. I really like watching romantic movies and series, and I have a strong interest in ones revolving around show biz (I really recommend the Taiwanese drama Skip Beat), so in my opinion, the most enjoyable parts were when the characters were acting or working on their show in some way. I found all of that really interesting, and I would've actually liked to have more of those elements.

The biggest thing that bothered me while reading this was the romance. It really reminded me why I prefer and enjoy YA romance over Adult. YA authors tend to focus more on building up the relationship between their leads, letting their romance blossom in a much more satisfying way. Whereas Adult romances tend to have the characters fall for each other instantly, constantly having them stare at each other with lust filled eyes, even though they literally just met five minutes ago, effectively killing all suspense in their romance. It just doesn't work for me. Even in The Kiss Quotient I was bothered by this, but luckily the author managed to build some suspense in a different aspect of the characters' relationship. All of that coupled with how unlikable the male lead was, I just couldn't justify giving this book any higher of a rating.

I liked the story.
The whole cast was interesting.
But it was predictable in a lot of layers.
At some point, you think the main characters are just bad for each other when the whole time they were good for each other, then all are forgiven.

So it fell in that area for me, but I did enjoy the book.
Was expecting more of the characters. so my guess that's why it fell to 3.

** more like 3.5 stars **
there's a lot to like about this book, and what alexis daria sets out to do i really do admire and respect. not only is she trying to write a romance novel (which is much harder than i think a lot of people give romance authors credit for), but she's also giving us latinx folks representation that is so sparse and rare in the romance genre and world of books in general.

i loved how our leading man has been the leading man of numerous telenovelas as well, and the effort to make him a rounded character instead of just "hot puerto-rican telenovela star". Our protagonist jasmine is also so lovely and reminded me of myself that i couldn't help but feel called out at some points lol.

something i didn't know about this book going in is how spicy it can get. Like, it was a welcome surprise don't get me wrong but it did sort of catch me off guard lol. I really liked how Alexis Daria knows how some dirty talk in spanish is leagues hotter than that in english, and it definitely made me feel something whenever ashton did so.

the ending is sort of jarring since conflicts and storylines seem to rapidly be tied up in a small amount of pages, but overall it's a happy ending and that's sorta the reason why i pick up romances in the first place. i just want to have a happy ending and i don't think there's anything wrong with that.

** SPOILERS **
additionally, I think the epilogue is such a welcome thing, as it shows that the characters' problems aren't resolved with them ending up together, but something they have to work on through therapy. i was a big fan of that.
