Content warnings: violence, blood, gore, body horror, murder, cult activity, animal death, mentions of cancer, death of a grandparent (in the past)
The first half of this was, I'm not gonna lie, kind of dull. Yes, the protagonist stumbles across a brutal occult murder. But that kind of fades into the background as she tries to find cover in a winter storm. But the second half? Gore. Mayhem. Betrayal. Nonstop pandemonium. I definitely didn't see the ending coming, that's for sure.

I enjoyed it. I love a good horror and 'there's something in the snow' is a great concept. I read it in just about one sitting but the last few chapters lost me a bit. The reveal at the end felt rushed and the epiloge made sense given the last chapter but raised more questions than it answered. Don't regret reading it but wouldn't recommend to a friend.
Writing was great, just the plot at the end seemed rushed.

I am always a sucker for cosmic horror, and there's some very interesting ideas here based on that, but I'm also a bit disappointed. I think the idea of snowy eldritch horror is one I've never seen before and one I've still not seen. Because the snow here is just set dressing for a typical cosmic horror plot inspired by The Shadow Over Innsmouth . And I liked where the story went, it was a very good spin on its tropes! But the snow was instrinsic to none of it and I can't forgive that letdown after setting up the prologue and first chapters as the snow being the horror.

This had such a cool presence, but I felt like the majority of the book was leading up to something that just never really hit. Why do we never find out more about the religion? The most we find out is about the sacrificial rituals and the sigils. Especially with the epilogue, I would've loved to learn more about the god they're worshipping. Also, Joseph's "character arc", if you can even call it that, makes no sense. At all. Actually, he could be completely scrapped and the book could still work. The epilogue was the most interesting part of the book for me! I would've loved to see Grace having to tackle being the leader of a religious cult that she had no interest in leading.

there were things i liked about the book—a spooky island off the east coast is suuuuch a good setting—but it was interrupted by a lot i didn’t care so much for. i did not love the writing style and found some of the choices of the characters to be confusingly motivated
a sequel set on a cruise ship though sounds veryyy intriguing
