A perfectly nice book (and I’m all for books with cats), albeit A Man Called Ove remains the much better example of this genre. It seemed mainly like a short examination of philosophy strung loosely around a plot (it seemed to end super abruptly, though).

I really don't think this was the book for me. It started out great in what I thought would be a fun little story about a professor and a cat, then it went rapidly downhill. I don't know if this was a translation issue or if that's simply how the story played out - chapters were very short (a plus!) but also seemed to be a series of events that happen to this man, rather than a smooth progression of the story.

I wanted to really love this book. I love quirky characters and literary references and foreign locations so this should have been an easy book to love. However, the references were too obscure to feel 100% comfortable with and starting on page 175 every third page was replaced by page 172 for the next 15 or so pages. I missed out on some of the storyline and never found out the resolution to the story of the boy whose father dies when a pig falls on him. Yes, things like that are mentioned in this book.

The main story line is about a man who is a loner. A cat enters his life and things begin to happen. I love the concept of "love in lowercase": when some small act of kindness (giving the cat some milks) sets off a chain of events that comes around again in the form of multiplied love." The biggest of which is running into a women he remembered from childhood as his first love. (She gave him butterfly kisses.) The problem is that she doesn't remember him and his view of her is overly idealized. I enjoyed the book. I didn't love it but I liked it.

This was weird. Is it a translation issue? A cultural issue? I don't know. The characters felt a little stereotypical and the tone wanted to be mystical and meaningful instead felt clunky (again could have been the translation). Samuel's life gets turned upside down when a cat enters his boring academic life. All thanks to the cat, Samuel creates new connections with his neighbors and with strangers at a bar. He also reconnects with some dopey girl he shared a butterfly kiss with 30 years ago. Other than the weird characters, Samuel ends up with the wrong person but also spends way too much time recounting plots of novels. No really, this makes up like 1/5 of the book. The cat however, is awesome. Barcelona bars, cafes and neighborhoods are well described and this might be enjoyed by those familiar with the city.

I have never before read a book where I felt that nothing happens. It will filled with all of the mundane moments of life that authors usually leave out of books. There were pages and pages of summaries of other books and long quotes from other books. I think that the whole books could have been made into a short story less than 15 pages long. The idea of the story was cute but the execution was horrible! If I were you I would not read this. I read it because it was on a list from Buzzfeed and they were totally wrong on this one.

Love in Lowercase is a cute novel about how small inconsequential things can have a big effect in our lives.  In Samuel's case, it was a stray cat changed his whole life. Admittedly this book, while short, was one that didn't hold my interest and the love story felt awkward.

Samuel is a lonely linguistics professor whose life is one of structure. He does the same thing everyday until a stray cat interrupts his happily mundane routine. This cat is the catalyst for change and turns his little world upside down. He meets his next door neighbor—an book editor—who he's never spoken to. This encounter leads him to Gabriela, the girl he fell in love with as a boy. He then meets an eccentric man named Valdemar who's more concerned with conspiracy theories than his own reality.

This book had his charming moments, like Samuel's interactions with his neighbor and his own internal musings on what to do when in love. It's filled with literary and musical references, showcasing Samuel's great love and appreciation for both.

I didn't really find this book to be "haha" humorous, but more amusing and quirky. Many reviewers have said maybe the humorous nature got lost in translation. That may be, but I think the humor and charm is in the eccentric characters, the connections, and the idea that a cat can turn this loner's life into something greater. What I took away from this book is the idea that there is magic in the mundane simplistic things of life, and I liked that.

My main problem I had with this book was that I just wasn't ever truly engaged in the book. But the love story was a part of that journey and it was so very strange.

Samuel had only seen Gabriela once as a boy and fell in love with her instantly. Several years later, he sees her walking down the street and realizes that he's always been in love with her since he was a little boy and will only ever love her. This didn't seem believable to me. I'm not saying that this sort of thing can never happen in real life; the author just didn't make me believe it here. Further, Samuel's internal struggle with his deep-seeded love for Gabriela felt almost creepy, especially when Gabriela didn't remember him.

The love story is very much secondary to Samuel's own self-discovery, which I did appreciate. This book was quirky and cute in moments, but it won't be one that I will revisit in the future.
