The short story format works well here, and makes for a nice jumping on point for folks who don't know a lot about Conan.
This is a collection of six short stories with a tiny little thread in them that connects them all together. Sadly, that tiny little thread of a story isn't resolved in this volume and, I suppose, it will carry on into the next one. I was kind of disappointed with that.
It's still Conan though - so I definitely enjoyed it. I think, so far anyway, that I like the new Savage Sword of Conan more. Having one cohesive story spread out through an entire volume, for me, was more entertaining than the short story collection that Barbarian gave me.
That said - the 6 short stories that we are given in Barbarian are pretty right-on. I definitely enjoyed them and will most certainly be carrying on with the series.
(I'd like to give this 3.5 stars if I could)

A bit familiar and safe for Jason Aaron but his Conan is damn near perfect - a brute of force going from battle to battle, victory to victory, test to test in a series of adventures all while the prospect of death lingers.
Nice art. Concise and varied stories. Would read again. The brooding brutish barbarian appears to be a fun protagonist to follow.
More than any other Conan comic I have read since the early Thomas stuff the first volume of Aaron's run captures the spirit of Robert Howards original Conan stories. We have a gruff, solitary antihero meandering through the blood and dust of his ancient world. The individuals are barely interconnected but the start of each features a map of Conan's fictional world with a blood splatter on the region each particular adventure takes place in that sets the tone for the issue. Overall I really liked the story and art. Aaron seems to have a real feel for this world after writing all those Thor and Dr. Strange issues. Asrar's art is darn good and Zaffino's issue is crazy good.
