I really like this series of JLAs. I do think it’s kind of repetitive of the FBAA storyline and characters, BUT I think that’s okay because I kind of like this story better. And I think it also helps show the parallel between Sera and Poppy’s stories since they’re ultimately connected and related.

This story started off slow and I felt like they were having a lot of sex (don’t get me wrong I love shut), but there wasn’t much plot development. It did pick up in the last half and once that happened I had a hard time putting the book down. The ending kind of snuck up on me and I felt left a lot of plot lines and points open that I thought would be resolved but I guess that’s because there’s going to be another book lol so I’ll just wait to find out! Overall it was a good story and plot with a twist at the end I wasn’t expecting, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

I always feel so conflicted about rating the books in this series. The writing is average and repetitive, but the overarching plot is intriguing enough to always keep me coming back for more. If there's one thing JLA is good at, it's a cliffhanger that insures you'll be reading the next book. At this point I'm in it for the long haul.

I'll start with what I liked about this installment in the FBAA/ASITE series:

- Nyktos and Sera are the embodiment of enemies to lovers, and you just can't beat that.
- Slowly piecing together the connections between the past and present is really satisfying.
- The spice is 🔥
- Plenty of conflict and character development
- Sera is unambiguously plus-sized and still badass

What I didn't like:
- The use of modern words and phrases is starting to get annoying. It pulls me out of the story and disrupts the flow. One character actually said "I nope'd out of the chamber" 🤦🏻‍♀️
- There are so many side characters (primals, gods, godlings, etc) That I honestly can't keep track of who is who, their titles, and what they look like. People would die, and instead of being upset I thought "who was that again?"
- SO REPETITIVE. Things I'm tired of hearing:
•I don't know why but her use of the word 'clamped' got on my nerves (it's used 16 times in the book) if I heard "my mouth clamped shut" or "pressure clamped my chest" one more time I was going to lose it.
•"Are you reading my emotions?" IT'S OBVIOUS NYKTOS IS READING YOUR EMOTIONS SERA, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ASK EVERY FIVE MINUTES.

I really enjoyed A Light in the Flame and it definitely answered some questions we have from Blood and Ash.   At times it did feel like I was rereading Poppy and Castille's relationship but I do think that is on purpose to show how similar they are and how the prophecy applies to both of them.  I am really interested to see how the last book in the trilogy ties everything up as I feel we still have a ways to go between where this book leaves off and what we know happens to Sera and Nyktos.

Not entirely sure how I feel about this book, neither loved it or hated it, but probably my least favourite book from this world.

I found the pacing to be slow in places and other bits unnecessarily dragged out. I will say that I will hand on heart will always fall into the emotive writing when its comes to Sera’s mental health, it gets me every time. I do like trying to link all the bits in the massive FBAA web but I did find myself ridiculously confused in other places. I also don’t feel I love the side characters as much in this series (Draken excluded cos who wouldn’t love Jadis), and I think thats one of the reasons I love FBAA so much. Interested to see what Kolis will do with this latest development though.

TWs: depictions of gore, violence, corpse depictions, ref to SA, panic attacks, anxiety and depression

3.5/5 (give us half star ratings!!)

This is honestly feeling like the stronger series at this point compared to blood and ash. And I do think JLA is doing better at being less repetitive with the inner monologue. I still feel like the plot goes around in circles a bit too much and the book could lose 200 pages without losing anything essential. I’m invested, I just want it to get there a bit quicker ;)
