Hearing that a few J.D. Salinger stories had leaked was a very interesting sensation: for one, the state of an unreleased work being "leaked" is very rare in the literary world (even more so for an author whose seminal work was published in 1951), so that alone lends an air of excitement that is often reserved for highly anticipated records or films. Second of all, J.D. Salinger is one of my favorite authors, so to hear that he has quite a formidable reserve of work that is to be released posthumously is an unexpected treat.
These stories are very consistent with Salinger's previously released works: uncannily realistic, dialogue driven driven scenes that act as a snapshot of a person's life as a whole. This being a pirated copy of the books, there are still editing errors, marginal notes, and the like, which makes the whole reading experience that much more endearing. The Ocean Full of Bowling Balls is the standout story, linking to the Catcher in the Rye universe (and Caulfield family) in a way that will excites those of us who love inter-story continuity and over-arching universes in an author's works. Birthday Boy feels like an open ended, ambiguously intended vignette (much like some of the stories in Nine Stories), and Paula is simply a bizarre idea for a story that he attempted to flesh out.

This is meant to be published in 2060, but has been leaked as a pdf online. The first story is highly recommended to Salinger fans (4*), the second two stories are not worth anyone's time reading or talking about (1*).

"There's no more to Holden Caulfield. Read the book again. It's all there," the court filing quotes Salinger as saying in 1980. "Holden Caulfield is only a frozen moment in time."
I'd highly recommend The Ocean Full Of Bowling Balls to any fans of The Catcher In The Rye, it is on par with it. I believe that this very short story (14 pages) is a prequel and not just an unrelated earlier story featuring Holden Caulfield and his brothers. I think that it provides the fictional basis for what triggers Holden's feelings, recollections and misadventures in The Catcher In The Rye.
Aside:
I'm starting to think that the general bitterness for women of Salinger's protagonist may have some biographical relevance to his missing testicle, shame for sex and searching for platonic relationships with much younger girls. But maybe coming to conclusions like this was exactly why he chose to live his life out as a recluse while preparing posthumous publications, so as to avoid biographical interpretations lowering the value of his work.

Почитати Селінджера мені захотілось після недавнього фільму «Селінджер» — але сам фільм порекомендувати не хочеться. Він одночасно і не показує чітко авторської позиції, просто об'єднуючи багато різних голосів, і не викликає враження тої правдивої щирості, яка так багато важила для Селінджера та деяких його персонажів.
За роки, що минули з часів запаморочливого знайомства, сюжети та деталі вивітрились із пам'яті, утім, хотілося чогсь нового, не важливо навіть, чи були ці оповідання написані до, чи після того, як автор почав переховуватися від спраглої публіки.
Книжка лаконічна. Це книжечка. Три оповідання.
Якщо в першому Селінджер переказує історію із життя родини Колфілдів, то в другому і третьому діють «просто» «якісь» люди.
Всі оповідання можна об'єднати одним словом — вони розпачливі.
Крім того, вони про правду і кривду, і про хворобу. Але не про одужання. А може, і не про хворобу. Скоріше, це оповідання про те, що іноді людям хочеться сховати від інших.
У тексті багато діалогів і мало авторських описів, зрештою, неясно, що автор думає про описувані ситуації, важливо, що він і не має на меті чогось іншого, ніж розказати. Він не зберігає дистанції між оповіддю і слухачем, не виступає мудрим посередником, навпаки, не залишає навіть натяку на мораль. Читач сам собі вирішить, що думати про все це.
Це сумні щирі оповідання про життя, в яких (напевно) все до останньої титли й коми вигадка, хоча це зовсім не важливо.
