I feel like I have given Haruki Murakami such a good shot at this point with 3 and an eighth of his books read, and yet I still just don't know what it is about him that I can't fully click with. I found myself incredibly bored during this one, which I hadn't experienced with any of his other books and was disappointing since this is probably one of his most popular books. I just did not gel with any of the characters and I still find his obsession with ejaculation disturbing and unnecessary. I think that this is probably between Kafka and Wind Up Bird for me and I might still try, if I can figure out how to get over his strange descriptions of women.

I feel so weird about this book therefore it has not been rated yet. I was warned that the book was weird when women were involved but then there were so many women involved?? I don’t know if I liked it but I definitely reacted to it throughout. I am feeling odd.

I kinda hate how all the female characters were defined by their relationships with the main character (at least that’s what it felt like to me). The writing was beautiful of course coming from Murakami and I felt suspended in sadness while reading the book. Really interesting ideas about the space between life and death.

loved how the pacing of the narration allows you to sit with whatever the characters feel, and say, and do.
felt very uncomfortable when the characters made slut-shaming comments or casual jokes about rape.
a meditative and thoughtful read, just how i like them :)
