I just hate that I can’t dnf books 🤧 it was so bad I don’t even know where to start. I didn’t like anything apart from maybe Midori’s character. This book is so misogynistic I don’t think the author has ever talked to a woman in real life. Also what’s with all the weird random sex scenes that felt so awkward I literally had to squirm and visibly cringe while reading them. And why does he use the word “penis” that many times ? WHAT WAS THE REASON? Oh and also the scene with 13yr girl ???

Yeah, the writing is good. It’s eloquent and captivating and descriptive. However, the plot and all the characters are written from a horribly misogynistic and sexist perspective. The three main women characters in the book are all traditional Japanese stereotypes of women and their existence is based on how they benefit the male protagonist. The book is also based largely on the mans sexual conquests which are written incredibly misogynistically. It was written a while ago yes. But so we’re a lot of books and though they are also incredibly sexist they are not held in such high esteem as this book. I am incredibly disappointed and vaguely disgusted.

I was going to give this 4 stars but it lost me at
why would he sleep with Reiko as well bro it doesn't add anything to the plot. That's the problem with this book even though I enjoyed it a lot at times in the middle of important events and sad situations people would sleep with each other and tell each other dirty jokes for pages and pages and for no reason. Reiko's back story was almost good with the failing pianist storyline but then it all got ruined for me with the Adult/minor bits. I don't know I just don't think there was any need for that. In Kafka on the shore it was like this as well, I don't know what the whole deal is with this authors books and adult minor content but I really don't like it. Also the misogyny...
I did like the plot mostly, it was depressing, tragic but it had some good lessons and it was quite reflective. Characters were quite interesting and flawed and I'm glad I gave this book a chance after all.

I liked the prose: it's efficient, sensitive, poetic, natural. There are some scenes, some imagery, that will remain with me like paintings. Otherwise, I did not enjoy any of the characters, the narrator's misogyny made it hard to get through the book, and I am left to feel unsure about the value of the observations about life, death, and mental illness given throughout this tale. I will give it this: both the ending and one specific character arc added a note of mystery that will stay in my head for a while.
