I think the way Murakami pictures woman is really problematic - they are only objects for desire and nothing more. That does drop the points for quite a bit, but the rest - please I want to read more! It is just really annoying to get a "WTF is this bullshit??" every 30 pages or so by the way woman are pictured as dumb and only pursuing men.

boring and incredibly unlikeable. found myself wondering so many times if the author has ever actually met and interacted with a real woman before. like genuinely. the way he talks about women and sex is gross and pathetic. yet more complex female storiess and characters lost to the male gaze and the manic pixie dream girl trope. also sincerely What The Fuck (r.e. the supposed lesbian character realising she's a lesbian because of a 13 year old 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 only for her lesbianism to be cured in the end by (you guessed it!) a penis... Fucking Gross.

I found the prose plodding and a little lacking, but the character writing of Toru Watanabe is superb: a man caught between his mistakes and continuing to make mistakes; a man who does not know what he wants, really. The women in the novel are not written with much complexity, but I feel this is acceptable as the protagonist - whose perspective we see from - is a subtle misogynist who does not see women as complex people.
