I expected too much after reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland before. This is a rather slice of life themed book without any fantasy rooting. In general the story line is a nice idea and I guess he put lot of thought and effort into it. It was rather boring to me reading it.
Like someone said before it was a bit obvious that the book was written by a man. I also didn't like much of the body shaming aspects. Yet his way of describing the scenery and places in his books, his writing in general is brilliant. Mixed feelings.

A deeply disturbing book to read as a queer female person. The descriptions of scenery are nice though?

I really enjoyed the symbolism that was used, especially regarding the 4 basic elements of nature, but the sexism and the uncomfortable sex scenes made me consider not finishing the book.

This is a weird book. I love Murakami’s writing style and i (mostly) enjoyed reading this book but there are problematic elements (I especially really really hated the story of when Reiko was a music teacher). The thing is, I don’t know if Murakami is a genius and has carefully constructed his characters or if these are his own misogynistic etc views coming through. Definitely give it a read but remember to check the content warnings (there are a lot). <3
