This started off more descriptive of the post pandemic world but slowly the stories came together. It was a little anticlimactic with the main antagonist but the ending felt perfect.

So happy to have read this book during quarantine. In a time where we’ve lost so much, Emily St. John Mandel has made me appreciate all that we still have

I absolutely loved this book. I can't believe I've had it on my Kindle for about 4 years, not reading it because I thought it would be too bleak, too pretentious. Why on earth did I think that? I was compelled to read it after watching Priscillas (https://www.goodreads.com/theeveningreader) "Books of the Year" video on YouTube. Thanks Priscilla!

I loved the constantly changing timelines, the characters and the fact it wasn't just a Walking Dead style zombie apocalypse novel. It was far more nuanced and not a zombie in sight!

Definitely one of my books of the year (yes, it's only January)

I've read this three times now--once on my own, once for book club, and then just now because I want to watch the TV adaptation, which I've heard is really good. But apparently this is the first time I've written a review. The plot is covered well enough in the blurb, so I won't go into detail. A swifly lethal, highly contagious version of the flu takes out 99% of the population of the earth in a matter of weeks. Those who remain are plunged into a dark time of fear and brutality, but slowly, over many years, civilization begins to return. I've loved it each time I've read it, and each time I've read it, I've appreciated its subtlety a little more-- it doesn't hit you over the head with violence and gore, the way so many post-apocalyptic/dystopian novels do, although there is plenty of violence, and many people use the situation to turn into their worst selves. It's more nuanced than that, and (I hope) probably more realistic about the way things might actually happen.

The only thing I will pass along is something that one of the guys in our book club said that made me laugh, something to the effect of-- she's spent all her time hanging out in writing workshops with humanities majors. My brother and I would have rigged up a hydroelectric power source in no time! There are engineers and scientists everywhere. --ha! He didn't dislike the book-- in fact, he really liked it. And so do I. Highly recommended.

I like how everyone is connected and you start to speculet how they are connected.
I really like Jeevan, and I like his "ending". I didn't like Kristen, O found her annoying. I don't know why, just didn't.
I wanted Jeevan everyone tp meet in the end. So was a little bumbt out when that didn't happen.

Very good book but a little bit more than I think was needed. It's written incredibly well and follows a handful of individuals before, through, and in the decades after a virus that wipes out civilization as it is known. It really is a fantastic story but sometimes I thought there was pieces of the story that really didn't matter and seemed unimportant to the story. Still overall a tremendous book.
