Guy Gavriel Kay, master of the almost-history, returns in full force here, crafting a world modeled on ancient China. Evoking a very different culture than his previous works, Kay makes it real while showing deep respect for the source material. The history and world of Kitai come to life and reverberate with the reader, so much that the inevitable struggles and passing claw at the heart.

I almost gave up on this book three or four times but I am glad I perceived. The last third was excellent and brought all the strands together - highly recommended and will certainly read more by the same author.
I love GGK's writing and how he makes ancient civilizations seem real and vibrant. This book takes place in a fictional world based on the Tang Dynasty. It explores a key moment in that history and attempts to make sense of the many key players and the decisions they made. However, not all of the storytelling made sense. Li-Mei's POV is interesting but ultimately feels pointless. Yes, it's fun to see how past events/people can influence current events but I feel like her story didn't go anywhere. I also felt the romance at the end came out of nowhere.

If you like what Kay does, you'll enjoy this book - that is, if you enjoy Kay's examination of a historical culture by setting a novel in a fantasy analogue that's our history made a little more heightened, intense, vivid. I love Kay, but did think his characteristic writing style was a trifle more self-indulgent here: not enough to mar the book, but enough to make me notice how much he enjoys using a particular turn of phrase. Perhaps not the best Kay to start with, but a great read nonetheless.
I was a bit disappointed by the last Kay novel, but this one is a return to form. I love how well we marinate in the culture; not a lot happens, but a _lot_ happens. The political machinations were a fun departure from the normal Kay experience of a character out of their element, though of course the protagonist here can mostly claim that to be the case.
boring, the female characters have the same personality, just different hair color and boob size, and all 3 of them are in love with the MMC (eye roll). There was an interesting side plot, but that led nowhere.

Trvalo mi to dvanáct dní. Nekonečně dlouho...
Čekala jsem bandu kouzelníků, jak po sobě budou mrskat čínskými znaky - a tím vysílat jednotlivá kouzla, zatímco se budou snažit těch 250 vzácných koní dostat z bodu A do bodu B.
Ani prd. Spíš je to příběh utkaný a vetkaný do historie, spíš historický román s lehkými fantasy prvky. Než jsem se na to adaptovala, než jsem za každým letícím smítkem prachu přestala vidět magický systém, to mi taky trvalo.
Je to pomalé, dějovost zabíjí poetický až lyrický styl psaní s kudrlinkami, pozadí bojů přehlušuje dění na císařském dvoře, pohnutky lidí, jejich myšlenkové pochody, ambice. Spletité pavučinky lží. MILIONY ODBOČEK, které začnou dávat smysl o XX stran později.
Jedná se o neuvěřitelně inteligentní dílo, vznikalo několik let. Je třeba příběh nechat plynout a začít ho žít. Pokouší veškerou čtenářskou trpělivost.
Musela jsem odkládat, protože už jsem nezvládala držet koncentraci. Pak se mi hloupě zase dostávalo zpátky. V čínských jménech se jeden lehce ztratí. Zdánlivý chaos ve vypravěčích. Nutnost číst opravdu slovo od slova.
Těžké čtení. Nedivila bych se, kdyby to někoho unudilo k smrti.
Ale já se vždycky těšila, až si pustím nějakou "chinese battle music compilation", uvařím si horký čaj a věnuji tomu další kus svého času. A po dočtení můžu říct, že se mi do rukou dostala zvláštní, ale skutečně dobrá kniha.
