Man, what a powerful ending! Set up wonderfully for book 2, assuming of course that we’re following the same characters.

The only reason this isn’t a 4-star is due to some annoying word choices and over explanation. At some point, it can be implied that the characters are carrying weapons. We don’t necessarily need to hear about how every person has the same axe, seax, and brynja every page.

Also, for the love of crap, I truly hope that he stops using the term “thought-cage” in the remainder of the trilogy. If someone went through and counted how many times that was written, you’d be my hero!

Really liked this book a lot! Just a few little annoyances drop it to a 3 star read.

This is super hard to review bc I started it like maybe August 2022? I read half then got called up for whatever it was I was waiting for (I think Thursday Murder) and when I came back to finish, it was checked out to someone else. So all these months later I finally got it and finished it but I think I forgot a lot of the beginning. But the second half was hella good! Very well written. I didn’t like Elvar and sort of thought she was an idiot, but by the end you realize that she sort of IS an idiot and for some reason that made me happier. I’m hopeful she will be less annoying now that she knows what’s going on. Varg is absolutely adorable and Orka- forget it. I don’t know that there’s ever been more of a badass ever written. On a weird note, I was reading this at a lacrosse game and someone asked what I was reading and I was like ohhhh noooo, ‘it’s a dragon book but I don’t usually read dragon books’ BUT!! That’s what I always say whenever I’m reading fantasy books- which happens a lot. So maybe I actually DO read fantasy? Who knows. As soon as I turned the last page, checked out book two and started it so I guess that’s a yes. #engelbrechtreads2023 #engelbrechtreads

Thought Cage.

That is all.

Real rating's 3.5. The beginning and end were good, but the middle was a bit of a slog.
