The Shadow of the Gods

Easily my new favorite book, easy to read and get absorbed into the world. All the characters are fleshed out well with clear motives, wants, and needs. So many little twists and turns, love it.

Gave it a try. Just not my style.

I expected more from this book and there was more I found to be frustrating or mid than I actually loved/liked.

The pacing was slower than I thought and the characters were nearly devoid of personality (I'm looking at you Varg and Elvar) and all the side characters were variations of cliche side-characters you can find anywhere else. The description in this book made me feel like pulling my hair out!! He re-used the same descriptions ALL THE TIME and used so many cliches. Some complain about the continuous use of "thought-cage" "seax" and "deep-cunning" and yes it was annoying when in a bad mood lol but I didn't mind it so much as I did just the general repeating of the same imagery and figurative language. Not very "master storyteller" in my opinion.

I enjoyed the monsters and world-building but not the way it was approached by the auther, which was very underexplained and undermined most of the time. The Tainted are such a cool concept and are very underused in the story in my opinion.

I literally couldn't stand Elvar. The ending was really exciting and I did really enjoy the way things came together and all the twists. I'll never get over the enraged dragon god using the word bitch???? Seems a little too modern and petty for her character.

It was less than I expected but still an interesting read. It was one of those books that I enjoyed reading but don't think much of when I'm not. I will most likely continue the series when I get the chance though I feel no need to read the second book immediately. Excited to see Biorr's POV! Though he was very hypocritical in the end...
