A world I'm endlessly curious about. Full of sworn oaths and mysterious gods. I will definitely continue.
SPOILERS:
Orka is my favorite. Her mysterious past. Her love for her family. Her being able to push all those feelings of grief down to find her son is truly impressive.
Elvar was lukewarm. I wasn't impressed by her bc everything was about her daddy issues. Even strong and honorable, it's about proving herself bc she feels like a brood mare to her dad. I liked her POV bc those around her.. and tbh the betrayal at the end would be my villain orgin story. he fucked her EVERY NIGHT where everyone could hear just to betray her/them. tbh he may have started liking her and took advantage of a woman's attention. He did ask her to come with him even after all that. if she did by some miracle go, his crew would definitely treat her like garbage. (I couldn't help but think of the guide feeling pity for her...did she know?...)
I had no feelings about Varg until the chapter Skalk says he'll do the ritual for a favor. Mind you when he mentioned the ritual Skalk called him naive for thinking it could stay between them. I'm sure Skalk saw this as a good opportunity..the perfect desperate naive man to agree to an unknown debt called on at any time that he's required to fulfill as per the blood oath... I... can't stand this level of naivete. As a former slave who got tricked out of freedom, I'd think he'd have learned his lesson. Many may argue bc he chose right in the end, but he heavily considered it, and I believe only didn't bc Skalk was impatient and miscalculated his instincts when threatened.

Absolutely obsessed with this book/this world that John Gwynne created. This was my first John Gwynne book and I loved his writing. He is so good at going into depth about the characters, the world, and the battle scenes were so good. I immediately added all of his books to my wishlist, and I will be continuing this series very soon. This is a high fantasy read so there is a lot of information given and you truly have to pay attention but there’s some great themes and set up happening in this book. I loved how he wrote the female characters, they were so strong and were definitely the stand out characters for me. Sometimes male authors don’t always write female characters well but John Gwynne does. If you are a fan of fantasy, this is a must read. I can’t wait to continue the series and his other books!

What an outstanding book. Absolutely flew through this book and loved every minute of it. This book has been on my TBR list for way too long and it is my first John Gwynne book and wow, I can’t get over how good this book was. I’ve read a lot of great books this year and this might be my favorite so far. WOW wow wow! Just can’t get over how much I enjoyed this book! The characters, the writing style, the story, the pacing! Flawless!
