Hard to put down for the first 3/4 but then it lost steam...undecided if I'll pick up the sequel

LET ME START BY SAYING THIS HAS NON-CON WHICH IS WHY I DIDN’T LIKE IT & I FEEL LIKE IT IS NOT STATED ANYWHERE AND NOT INCLUDED IN TRIGGER WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!!
I wanted to rate this 5⭐️ so badly because I freaking love Alexis, Nyx, & fluffy Jr. but the whole
Kharon & Augustus punishment at the end grosses me out and they’re honestly so creepy and disgusting. I thought at the beginning it was gonna be enemies to lovers with one or both and then they just went on to be the absolute worst and I’m so uncomfortable I ever thought she should have them as love interests. Makes me nervous because I don’t want them to end up together in future books & im honestly not sure what is going on with Patro & Achilles?????? I’m more into the nice sweet innocent love interests so I’m rooting for Drex or someone to come in the second book that is better lmao but that is absolutely not happening so I had to lower my rating for now :/
Alexis is seriously one of my fav main characters ever though I really hate that the ending was what it was 😭

is the main relationship in this book a lil toxic? yes. did i enjoy this book? omg absolutely. it’s a dark romantasy that deals with a lot of heavy topics. you should definitely read the trigger warnings before reading this book.

Fantastic, was hooked after 3 chapters. Is full of action and magic. There were a few twist i didnt expect.

This book had such a neat sounding premise, but unfortunately was poorly executed with more time being spent trying to create a waste of sexual tension between the lead and characters that were abusive. I found myself annoyed through most of it, hoping that eventually the book would get better but instead it was redundant and like trying to create a mythology-based “50 Shades” type experience that was too long for what it was and too boring for what it could’ve been. Ugh. I love mythology-based fiction when it’s done right (like Song of Achilles which I strongly recommend). This book felt like a waste to me. Bummer, it could’ve been good.

The book had interesting dry and dark humor. Alexis is kinda whiny and dramatic. The story itself was not really a pageturner, but interesting enough to keep coming back to.

As a note, I listened to the audiobook. The VAs were what made me laugh more than the words. I probably wouldn't have finished the book if I was actually reading it. Yet, the VAs made it so enjoyable that I am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Summary/Overview/Personal opinion
The warnings should be taken serious.

Alexis was trying to survive in a world full of Spartans and Titans.
As a human, where there’s a scarcity on everything after the world crumbled during the last Titan attack, she just wanted to keep her and her brother alive to use their food stamps. First she would have to pass a test.
Unfortunately she passed with flying colors. Turns out she’s a Spartan. Forced into an endurance ritual at the Spartan War Academy, she has to survive a year in unforgiving conditions along with the mentors and professors that hate her for an unknown reason.
With scars and a painful past, Alexis tries to get through this new obstacle and maybe find out that there’s more to her life than trauma she’s been shoved into since birth. Maybe her teachers Augustus, son of the god of war, and Kharon, the ferryman of death, with help or will they add to the pile?

If you enjoy characters not communicating with each other, a messed up society that the main character doesn’t know the rule to but every expects her to know, and main character that keeps falling down depressive-traumatic mental rabbit holes. This is your book.
The audiobook is has an amazing full cast. Expect Meg Sylvan narrating for 95% of the story.
Details can go for too long and the main character is blind to a lot of misinformation which can be frustrating. Don’t go in expecting things to match up to Greek Myth.

Personal opinion: I liked this story. It brought back memories of reading  original fiction online and excited when the next update was going to drop. It’s a patience endurance where I’m rooting for Alexis’ brain to power on. I pre-orders the next book.
