I expected something different, not going to lie. It's not a bad book, but it misses something. At least for the most part of the book, seeing as the most interesting events unfolded in the last two and a half hours.
Even the character work feels unsatisfactory, as if it lacks something fundamental. The only highlight of the book for me was the relationship between Nico and Gideon. 
All in all I do plan to read book two, I'm just in no rush to get my hands on it.

Heavily character driven, but I always like a good morally grey character (and this has multiple!), with a very loose plot. It kinda reads like YA imo, similar to Deadly Education, and has the same vibes as Umbrella Academy. I liked the development of each of their magical abilities as we learn more about them. It definitely meanders in the first bit and the last 30-50 pages are PACKED. There are also lots of loose ends left, but I’m assuming that will come up in the second book. I can see why this book is so divisive, but overall an entertaining read
