“There is no honor in betraying your friends”
I finished this last night and had to really let this book sink in because I wasn’t expecting to be hit so hard with this book.
I won’t deny that I was super scared and intimidated going into this book. I don’t know much of Ancient Greek history or mythology in the slightest. I was sounding out and phonetically trying to figure out some names hardcore. But it doesn’t take away from the this story in the slightest.
I loved it. I loved the characters. I think that Petroclus is a sweet bean who wants to protect the people he loves even though he has always been a little lost. I think Achilles starts out good and by the time of the Trojan War he becomes such a dick. But I love seeing him spiral through Petroclus’s eyes and point of view because you are seeing someone who loves him and then watches them spiral into a dick.
The fact that this is Madeline Miller’s debut is insane. I do now want to pick up Circe because everyone loves it. She did a wonderful job on this.

Look, I knew what I was getting myself into when I started this book. A modern retelling of the famous greek tragedy with a doomed gay romance. And it is. I found it a relatively quick read and enjoyed Patroclus's point of view.
For 90% of the story, I was ready with a solid 3-star review for me. The last 10% was something else entirely and I had to up my rating in response.
The last chapters of this book are just heartwretching. Miller really showed her prowess as a writer with the fallout following Patroclus' decision. The raging fury and hollowness of grief is raw and powerful in these chapters, and I was brought to tears by several lines:
"It is the last thing she will ever say to him."
"Do not leave, I beg them. Not until you have given me peace."
"Do not leave me here without him."
"In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood, like a hundred golden urns pouring out the sun."
If you will excuse me, I need to go get a hug...

This book was good as heel (haha). But really. I loved this book and it will stay in my top ranked books for a while.
