An eerily prescient novel that takes the Kennedy political curse as a narrative conceit and applies so much downward pressure on its fictional Francis Kennedy that he endangers his family, himself, the U.S., and the world. A mature ensemble work, full of shifty and philosophical characters in a compulsively readable political thriller.

A page turner, but deeply unsatisfying. I was kept guessing as to the plot and motivations, but at the novel’s end, the latter was still mystifying. Clancy, Forsyth, Larry Bond, and other masters of the thriller can tie a bow at the end of their novels. Puzzo doesn’t come close.

Cuốn này đọc mệt phết, lý do:

- Nhiều thông tin, kiến thức về bộ máy chính quyền Mỹ. Nó cũng đề cập đến sự phức tạp trong mối quan hệ lợi ích giữa quốc gia trên thế giới hay giữa các tập đoàn lớn với các nhân vật trọng yếu trong chính phủ.

- Như nhiều cuốn sách khác của Mario Puzo, các cảnh bắn giết, bạo lực được mô tả rất kĩ, rất có tâm.

Tuy đọc mệt nhưng tôi vẫn thích, lý do:

- Cốt truyện hay quá, nhiều pha gay cấn đọc không bị chán, diễn biến tâm lý nhân vật được phác hoạ tốt, những sự biến đổi tâm lý sau mỗi sự kiện diễn ra hợp lý khiến người đọc đồng cảm.

- Như trên đã nói, nhiều thông tin, kiến thức về chính trị - chính quyền Mỹ. Đọc xong rồi thì có thể sau này cũng quên thôi, nhưng không vì thế mà không đọc, không thu hoạch. Đọc tiểu thuyết mà thu thập được kiến thức nữa thì nó giống như là có lợi gấp 2 rồi, kiểu vậy.
