The pacing and writing style were difficult for me but it's an important, clever story. A slow starter with a good, portal fantasy hook and great payoff in the last third.

Japanese literature has always been a hit or miss for me, and this one is no exception. The overall story was okay. I feel like this story wants to bring dark theme to the fairy tale story, but the execution failed to meet my expectations. It lacks of depth both in the fairytale and in the psychological/social aspects. Or maybe this is because I only read the translated version I couldn't get myself indulged into the story except for the 1/4 part towards the end. I like the ending even thoughthe plot twist is predictable, I also like how everything and everyone is intertwined. Overall it's an okay read.

This book had some interesting concepts and some great characters. I found the main twist to be a little too predictable and the second twist just did not pay off for me. Overall, I enjoyed the main theme of the book but it was a bit of a downer to start the year on.
