4.5

I love Riley Sager. It’s the third book that I’ve read from him and I’m never disappointed.
The only thing that I didn’t really like (which explained the 4.5 stars) is the slowness around the middle/start of the book.
Except that, it was super fun. I liked how present and past/the Book were intertwined. While reading the Book, we could explained things in the house during the present (or not)
Throughout the pages, I was, at the same time, sure it wasn’t a ghost story but I couldn’t stop myself having a part of me believing it was a ghost story…
when Maggie herself started to believe ghosts were real, I also started to believe it

I almost wished it was ghosts.
During all my reading, it reminded of the serie on Netflix, the Hill House. While not entirely the same, there have the same vibe.
Great book.

For me this book was a comfort horror/thriller read. I enjoyed the split perspective of the book and present day, the visuals of the house, and while the ending wasn’t entirely surprising I was ok with that because to me this book was more about the journey then the conclusion anyways. This book is about family, perceptions, and the difficulties which come with navigating grief and loss. For those who enjoy a mix of supernatural and realistic horror this is a great pick.

Haunting of Hill House vibes 👻

I really enjoyed this book! The POV switches between Maggie's current-day and what sounds like her Dad's famous book "House of Horrors." I loved the chilling encounters with the house, both in the past and current day and how they paralell. The non-chemistry chemistry between Maggie and Dane seemed out of place and the fact that her parents just continually avoided talking about the past were some things that snagged me, but ultimately were ignorable. I was constantly flipping back and forth about whether the end of the book would reveal if the house was truly haunted or not. I won't spoil, of course, but I'll say that I was satisfied by the ending.

Gotta go borrow Sager's other books now.
