This book genuinely had me scared at some points, my jaw dropped at least 2 times and I didn’t want to turn the page at other times because I was scared about what was going to happen lmao. The ending was a little disappointing but the whole book had me hooked.

More twists and turns than a mountain switchback. As I read this book, I couldn’t help comparing my goosebumps to those I got when I read The Shining.

This book is the ultimate question of: is it paranormal or is there answer for everything that's happened? The story is told through alternating chapters of Maggie and her father's novel he wrote about the terrifying twenty days they lived in what he claims is a haunted house. Just like any alternating perspective novel, I ended up preferring the father's narrative over Maggie's, since Maggie's life was mostly mundane.

The fact that Maggie's dad covered up the fact that Maggie was actually Petra's killer with his novel was probably the most extra, laboring, and nonsensical option he could've chosen. And then to have Maggie actually *not* be the killer felt wrong--the real killer felt a bit like a scapegoat out of left field.

Did I still give it a four even for its flaws? Yes.

I would just like to state for the record for my parents, if I have ever committed a heinous crime that I don't know I did--PLEASE don't tell me in letter form (and please don't include crude language explaining why you left me alone with the babysitter).

I was about to be VERY disappointed in the ending of this book, but the last chapter saved it. It started out as everything I wanted “the haunting of hill house” to be, didn’t end that way but.

Definitely felt and read like a reimagining of Hill House, not in a bad way… but not in a good way either.
Shirley Jackson did it better.
