This book didnt start with world building which had me very confused for a brief moment but then I got in the flow of learning through the characters. I loved the sass and banter. Definitely going to read the next book.

Gideon has one of the strongest voices I’ve ever read in a book and I couldn’t love it more. It was so fun and genre-bending. I had a hard time following the action sequences, and a delightful time with literally everything else!

At first I was into it, but at some point my interest unfortunately waned and then I struggled with reading further.

It's a bit sad because I really wanted to like it, especially since I have friends who love it and I've heard great things.

I have it on loan from a friend and will now return it. Maybe I'll give it a new shot in the future.

Entertaining, but I didn’t feel “in” this world. The magic and setting is not well described or explained within the story. The concept is fun- especially character dynamics and overall aesthetic- but it seems that’s about as far as Muir got with the idea before making it a story. The “why” of whole plot, this whole competition to be a Lyctor thing, was lost on me. Because I didn’t really get why they were doing all of this or why it even really mattered, the twist and turns did not grab me. Needs more angst. Bonus points for charismatic butch main character tho :)
