I listened to this audiobook in less than 24 hours. Mathematically, this is impossible, and I don't know what to say except that I had no idea what was happening in this book and I didn't care 99% of the time.

I'm going to find the sequel. Bye.

Total score: 5/5 stars

I love the rawness of very modern characters forced into this outdated culture of magic and necromancy PLUS the capability of space travel. It has a Dune vibe, but darker and more magic. Personally, I greatly appreciated the LGBTQ+ characters included in the story as normative. That was a lovely addition that doesn't always happen in books that mix sci-fi and fantasy.

While I enjoyed the twists throughout the storyline, I think the clue-dropping could've been a little cleaner. Nevertheless, Muir presents a fascinating first book of the series with brilliantly memorable characters and a world you're eager to learn more about.

8/10. What's with that 'kill your gays' trope? I'm not going to continue reading the series because I was promised more romance—specifically, necromancer lesbians—and it has been underwhelming in that regard. While the plot itself is interesting, the lack of romance is disappointing, which is why I'm rating it an 8.
