edit june 2024: i got covid for the 1st time & read this in 2 days. STILL HITS !! tamsyn you sly dog.... gideon the second time around is a macaroni salad that's sat in the fridge overnight: a marinated, delightfully mellower flavor, easier to savor and appreciate, & also for me to inhale w gusto & euphoria, bathed in the concentrated halo of a single light source at 3am. slurping this gay mayonnaise & pasta & blowing a big kiss across the pond to miss muir........ so fun, so good AMEN !!

I totally loved Gideon the Ninth. Gideon the character is adorable to me; the book is deeply entertaining. When I picked up it up on recommendation from a client, I had just surfaced from a deep-dive into theory-reading, academically perfumed queer studies essays, and nonfiction factoid books about objectively boring stuff, so I wanted to have fun. And Gideon is a really fun book.
Other adjectives besides "fun" include refreshing, action-packed, entertaining, gay. Gideon as a protagonist and narrator is lovable, have-a-crush-on-able, brave to a fault, strong, silly, butchy. Muir goes light on the worldbuilding - throwing just enough detail to bewitch the reader with a setting that is both equal parts fantastic and science-fiction - and heavy with her delightful cast of supporting characters, who despite all appearing at once and in great number eventually resolved, for me, into individual, well-fleshed out and satisfying-to-read members of Muir's cast. The story itself is, as I said before, both fantasy and science fiction, as well as a whodunit mystery with magical (read: necromantic) spice. Sprinkle in some sword-fights, haunted castles, and big explosions... I'm sold.
I could go on about Muir's talent writing such lovable, readable characters, her ability to move the plot at an unrelenting but satisfying pace, or the way the story and writing are both deliciously rich and easily digestable. But what really sold me on this book was just, like, the fact that it's a sci-fi action book about queer girls. There are cool swords and magic and homoerotic subtext; the latter just makes everything taste better. I really can't ask for much more. It made me proud. This is what scifi-fantasy should aspire towards.

Took me a bit to get into it, especially since I DNF'd early in the year, but once I did, I was hooked. The worldbuilding is expansive and the cast is fully-fleshed, but sometimes the modern slang and snark yanked me out of the necromantic murder mystery vibes. The mix of eerie gothic atmosphere and irreverent banter is unlike anything I’ve read before. Weird, chaotic, and surprisingly heartfelt, this is worth the read if you’re up for something delightfully strange with many unpredictable twists and turns.
