There are a few common tropes in this book, but done in a much better way than I usuay see. The magic system focused solely on necromancy was interesting also. This book was a lot of fun while still packing an emotional punch or two.
I am excited to continue this series.

Real slow burn - stick with it!!
This was very much made for me. Love the characters and world building, and didn't mind things I'd often seen as criticism (the quips? didn't take me out, and I found it much less confusing or Gideon as incurious as I'd seen implied beforehand). And the ending went straight to my Bartimaeus-engraved heart.

Despite this book being hyped as "the lesbian necromancers in space" novel, I expected way more lesbians, romance, and Sci-Fi elements than what this novel actually has. Internet hype aside, this book is still very enjoyable and a great popular representation of sapphism in modern fiction (even giving a sapphic flair to romance tropes usually attributed to straight relationships).
There's also incredibly accurate depictions of human skeletal biology that isn't really seen in most fiction media depicting necromancy or the undead, so big kudos of the author for including those.

I'll preface this review by saying that I've seen a lot of criticism about the writing style of this book - and to be fair...it really can be high-sounding at times but it definitely is on purpose! The contrast between the narrative flow and Gideon's very crass running commentary serves to ameliorate both. For me, the dramatis personae are really the highlight of this book so even though it was challenging to read at times, I really did appreciate it from a technical standpoint.
Gideon wins top spot in my heart for sure, but Harrow, Palamedes and Camilla were no slackers. If you're looking for a golden example of how to write character voices, Tamsyn Muir is really a genius.
This book is character driven, the plot is fast paced and full of twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat. It is the perfect backdrop to explore themes of the human psyche and our ceaseless, fear driven desire to move away from our imperfect existences.
And the worldbuilding! I really have to admit that I have always thought of necromancy in a narrowminded, two dimensional way until I read this book and I never even realized. If you're looking for a deep dive into everything that necromancy has to offer look no further.
I'm looking forward to seeing where things pick up in the second book because the ending to this one really left me wanting more.

I adore this book. It had been a while since I read anything, and decided to pick up Gideon the Ninth on somewhat of a whim. All I knew was that it was about space lesbians and what I gleaned from fan art that appeared on my tumblr dash. I'm so glad I decided to read it. While at first I was unsure if it was my type of book, I found myself drawn in by the story and characters very quickly. Probably one of my favorite books of all time, as I've never read a book as hilarious and heartbreaking. I legit think about these books once a day.
