forcefully written with depictions of violence against women so clear i felt i had to look away from the page. an engaging story, but maybe horror novels are something i only read once or twice a year for a reason…

i really liked the spooky creepy vibe. the body horror description really made me want to puke and i got overall pretty scared while reading the first few parts. the beginning was a little bit slow but the pace got pretty fast after part four, maybe a little bit too fast?? so many things happened and i was expecting NONE of it! which is great. so many twist that i didn’t saw coming. the main character is extremely reliable, not personality-wise but in her womanhood and experience as a woman. even if she’s 50 and i’m only 20, i did relate a lot to her feelings.

i would say i got a little bit bored when the furies became friends with mary. the main reason i got scared while reading this book was because they were here. dead naked women with bloody pillowcases on their heads and sharp pointy fingers that can slice you up like you’re some grated cheese. that’s pretty scary. but they kinda lost all of their credibility when they started helping mary and siding with her. nothing was horrific or thrilling about this book anymore, it was just “lets kill everyone that did us wrong” type of horror.
but don’t get me wrong! i really liked the whole women supporting and helping other women even through death, but not in a horror book where these spirits are supposed to be the antagonist in a way?? apart from that i really enjoyed this book! i couldn’t put it down for two days straight and i was always excited to turn a new page and know more about mary!

i spent 3 weeks annotating it meticulously because i knew immediately when i started reading it that i would absolutely love it
the ending wraps up the book beautifully and i absolutely loved the first person point of view it just scratches my brain in the perfect way its used /perfectly/
i was shocked to find out it was written by a man after i finished, its an amazing book and i aplaud nat cassidy for doing such a wonderful job

This is a gory, horror masterpiece! This is a new favorite book for me, and possibly my favorite horror book of all. It’s disgusting and beautiful at the same time. Explores the horrors of the patriarchy and how women, especially older women, are treated. And it’s written by a man. Like, what? Heavy trigger warnings, so check those before reading.

Mary is about a sincerely weird middle aged woman with identity issues who returns to her verbally abusive aunt’s home in hopes of reliving her past and finding out who she is. Unfortunately, Mary is tied to the town in ways she never expected and is haunted not just by her past, but by actual malevolent spirits only she can see.

This one is a gory, weird, humorous, and empowering novel about how society views middle aged woman mixed with a violent twisted cult led by a misogynistic serial killer and kooky townspeople.

Mary was hard for me to get into at first just because Mary herself it is not very likable to begin with and the story moves a little slowly. However, I stuck with it and I’m glad I did because once things start happening they don’t stop! I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed this one, and recommend it to anyone looking for a horror novel that’s disturbing and twisty but feminist and reflective.  Check content warnings for sure, this one is gory.
