Katherine Center is one of the authors I will automatically read. I’ve been waiting for this book since I finished Hello Stranger and I was over the moon to receive an ARC.
This book follows romance writer Emma as she goes to LA for a co-write with Charlie Yates. THE Charlie Yates, the screen writer she’s semi-obsessed with. The only problem is that his new screenplay is terrible. A couple of tropes, forced proximity and a a little bit of a grumpy/ sunshine dynamic. Delivered by a true pro and a delight to read.  I especially enjoyed the cameo of heartthrob Jack Stapleton and Hannah, two characters from The Bodyguard- my favorite KC book so far.

5 stars and a some swoon worthy kisses. Katherine Center is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books just fill your soul with laughter and joy. I seem to feel happier when I finish her books. More positive.

The Rom-Commers did not disappoint. I can’t wait to read it again and start taking quotes from it. I got this as an advanced copy from NetGalley and I am so grateful to them, Katherine Center and St. Martin’s Press for allowing me to read this.

As I always try to do: No 🌶️ but about 9 f’ words.

All of the stars to this book. This is my new favorite Katherine Center book, hands down. I received the ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review and have already pre-ordered my copy. This book is nothing short of incredible. It has all the elements of a good rom-com, and if you aren’t sure what those are then you definitely need to read this book! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my eARC!

Emma Wheeler, a devoted daughter and aspiring rom-com writer, has tasked herself with caring for her disabled father following a tragic accident. When her best friend and former boyfriend, Logan, presents her with a life-changing opportunity, Emma takes a leap of faith, leaving her father in the care of her younger sister, Sylvie.

Enter Charlie Yates, a renowned screenwriter faced with an unusual challenge: to write a romantic comedy, a genre outside his comfort zone. Logan orchestrates a collaboration between Emma and Charlie, forcing them to work together on what could be the most epic rom-com ever. However, Charlie isn’t into the plan and is used to working solo, creating tension between the two.

I promise this story will tug at your heartstrings, with Emma’s father’s situation, flirty banter and moments of humor, even some dramatic and stressful moments that brought tears to my eyes. The Rom-Commers is packed with all my favorite tropes, including forced-proximity, grumpy v sunshine, and strangers-to-lovers, making it an easy 5 star read for me - my first of 2024!

Please be mindful of TW’s when reading this story and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

The only gentle critique I have about this book is that at times, I noticed a few words that felt a bit like leafing through a thesaurus. Overall, though, 'The Rom-Commers' is a delightful journey that I'd gladly take again!

A huge thank you to Katherine Center and NetGalley for this eARC.

The Rom-Commers will release on June 11, 2024.

Q: What was the last big leap of faith you took? Or would you rather co-write or co-star in a romantic comedy?

One thing about me is that I love a romcoms. I have devoured most of Katherine Center's earlier books, so when I saw this title announced, I was eager to read it ASAP!  I'll be honest with you - I read this entire book in two sittings on the same day ... I just couldn't help myself.

Our narrator in this book is Emma. She is a talented writer who absolutely loves movies, especially romantic comedies, but has never had the chance to work in Hollywood because she has spent the last ten years in Texas caring for her disabled father 24/7. Her ex-bf, who is now a big-time agent in LA, has reached out to her to see if she can assist one of his high-profile clients with a re-write of his a terrible rom-com script. Turns out the client is an adventure-sci fi movie writer that Emma is obsessed with!

With her younger sister caring for her dad, Emma sets out for LA and meets Charlie (Mr. Famous Screenplay Writer).  He isn't what she expected, nor is the project, but they start working together anyway on the script and it is So. Much. Fun.   Emma's inner dialogue and thoughts are funny, and I particularly loved when she SPOKE to the reader directly. It made it so different and fun. Emma was so relatable to me, with her favorite writing hoodie, her nervousness, sarcasm, and inner angst. And I have to mention Charlie's pet hamster!! I love that the author included that facet of him. It showed the soft side of Charlie and made him cute-r.  Emma and Charlie have great chemistry, and the build-up, the dialogue, and the unsure-ness that is so very human was all just perfect.

One last thing I wanted to acknowledge was when Emma talked about how and why people gravitate to fiction. How we often turn to stories to help find what we are longing for, or deal with what we're struggling with. This concept resonated with me, and made me think about why I love reading. It was a little moment in the book that I thought was so well done.

This book comes out on June 11, 2024 and I encourage you to check it out! Thank you to the author, St. Martin's Press, and NetGalley for the delightful opportunity to read an ARC of this book and provide an honest review. All opinions here are my own.
