Oh I loved the story of Emma and her personal struggles (she was so me at times it hurt) and Charlie just being this normal guy dealing with all this shit. LIKE OOOH HE LOVES HER HAIR AND WORE HER DRESS AS A HANDKERCHIEF IM GONNA KILL MYSELF

"Be aggressively, loudly, unapologetically grateful."

Another Katherine Center I dove in to because I had a fun time with her last book. The main characters of this book, Emma and Charlie, are both screenplay writers. I thought screenplay writers are just like fiction writers but through this book, I realized that it's somewhat different. They actually have to show through their writing how the director should direct the actors and that's the main difference.

Anyways, it was a little deep of a book where they tackled grief and illnesses. It's not solely about them reenacting love scenarios (although it's kinda cute to see a fan actually fangirl around her idol). It's really about those deep conversations about their family and current problems. It does balance it out by having the main characters banter with one another, which I definitely love. The main reason why I rated it as an "okay" read is that I find their romance to be also just "okay". There was no angst that I usually love about the book. The third act conflict is also "okay" wherein it did not make me feel so much feelings. I'll still continue reading her books even though this was the second one I read of hers because I did enjoy reading through it!

This book was a good mix between lighthearted and tug on your heartstrings moments. This is a book that is definitely for a more mature audience. That is one thing I didn't not like about the book is the amount of spice. But this is my personal preference. So if you are like me and don't like spicy books then maybe this one is not for you.

SPICE WARNINGS/SPOILERS

*Most of these scenes I skipped over so I might not remember everything*

  • There is mention on sex and orga... But nothing happens and it is easy to skip over.
  • The first kiss scene is very descriptive but again you can skip over this part and still get an idea of what is going on.
  • There is a moment where the two main characters are in a room together. One takes the clothes off of the other because they can't. Their eyes are closed the whole time. Then they end up kissing and almost in bed. But things stop before anything happens. One of the characters is also drunk as well.
  • The last kiss scene is pretty clean as it is infront of people.
  • There is also talk about death, anxiety attacks, and injuries

Delightful read. I laughed out loud several times, and also was deeply moved by the emotional experiences of the characters. Very well written.

Loved Emma, Katherine Center always writes great female protagonists. Hilarious, deeply relatable stream of consciousness narrating. Charlie felt a little underdeveloped to me, which made it a  harder to connect with him and thus see his side. But all in all a delightful read
