Okay so, now that I have finished this nightmare… an explanation of my rating. I would have given this one star, strictly because of how awful Lori is. Lori is written to be the most abhorrent person, woman, sister, everything- that I’ve ever read about. I cannot think of a worse FMC. In the beginning, Triana makes you feel sympathy for this person, to a degree, while still letting you know she’s a bit of a disaster. The further you get into this story and the flashbacks, the worse she gets. The more abhorrent she gets. In the end, Lori is the worst kind of person, and the sympathy you once felt is completely dissipated.

Now why did I give this a more than fair rating of three stars? Because the description of the river of flesh and the river man himself was so detailed that I was able to imagine it clear as day. It was gory, creepy, and dripping with existential dread.

Overall? There were parts of this book that made me feel gross for even glossing my eyes over the words. The need for a shower was apparent several times. If that’s your thing, I say go for it.

I read this because of horror booktok and I didn’t expect most of it. Dark and gruesome some is really just for shock or gore factor. Warnings for gore, SA, abuse and incest

I did enjoy it but some of it felt unnecessary and just for shock value
