i wanted to love this, but the pacing felt really odd to me, and i wish we’d gotten to know the characters in more depth. a lot of it felt incredibly surface level, especially considering the themes and topics the author was trying to discuss. would speculate that there was an incredibly white team behind this who sanitised the details and missed a white woman calling a brown boy her little curry puff (dear god).

I think this book just wasn't my cup of tea. I think it could be one that many would enjoy as a young man travels the world trying to find the one that he loves and left behind, Farouk. Farouk asked Sy to come with him originally, but Sy wasn't ready at the time and regretted it pretty quickly. When Reggie shows up outside his work granting wishes with mysterious amounts of money, it's not a surprise that Farouk's name comes up. The ensuing adventure is a page turner.

THE LOOPHOLE is a perfect blend of humor and heart that is sure to become a favorite. The voice is strong and had me laughing at some parts and crying (too much) at others, but in the very best way. It deals with painful topics as much as it deals with hopeful ones, and is the kind of book that captures the beauty of life because of it.

The characters are a major strength of the book. Sy is relatable, courageous, and so sweet, and it is wonderful to see how he shifts throughout the journey. Reggie is absolutely hilarious and I became an immediate fan.

All in all, THE LOOPHOLE is a brilliant debut that is both fun and emotional, and sure to be a new favorite for plenty of readers (including me!).

I really enjoyed this book overall - from the jetsetting nature of it to the juxtaposition of the djinni story, it all flowed really nicely. There were parts I wish we lingered on, like Sy's relationship with his father and the fallout of the breakup with Farouk, but it still manages to be a fun read despite all of the complicated issues it touches on. There's so much homophobia and islamophobia throughout this book (purposefully so), and we get to see how the Muslim community view the radical sects they're often generalized to. From LA to Marrakech, the book flies by on a private jet and I just wish we had more time with it.
