I loved this book and cannot wait to read more by this author. This is the first traditionally published Native rom-com!! Everyone deserves representation in all forms, even in silly rom-coms. Danuwoa is an angel and I loved his sister as well. Ember did piss me off a lot throughout the book though (even though that was kinda the point with her lying lol). Like Danuwoa said at the end, it wasn’t that she lied to get her job — that I wholeheartedly understand and agree with — it was continuing to lie to him about the silliest things like being allergic to his cat and lying to her coworkers that she had a boyfriend. Those little lies got annoying really quick.
Besides that, I think this was a fantastic story about a young woman getting herself into the accounting field by any means necessary and finding love.
Danica is hilarious and it really shines through the page. I also love that the FMC was sort of based on Danica’s experience getting into the workforce — she too is mixed race and finally just put “Caucasian” on job applications to finally receive a call back. I hate that so many people have to go through that, but glad that people now have that representation built into a romance book.

This is a fun little rom-com! Though Ember's growing lies did stress me out there for a good portion of the book. The chemistry between her and Danuuwoa spilled off the page, though, and there is just generally a great cast of characters. An enjoyable light read for me after some heavier books.

While I enjoyed this book I found it hard to stay engaged in the story. I kept putting it down and was not very motivated to finish. I also could not get over the compulsive and consistent lying from the FMC. Her lying to get a job she wasn’t even qualified for diminished the real racism many qualified individuals experience in the hiring process.

From the moment I saw the announcement for The Truth According to Ember I desperately wanted to read it; I jumped at the chance to listen to it. I ended up really enjoying it too! Danica Nava captures the romantic comedy better than any other author I've read. This was the perfect amount of steamy, romantic, and hilarious. And, it's the first ever traditionally published romantic comedy by an Indigenous author.

Ember is one of my favorite kinds of characters because she's a realistic look at what being in your 20s is like. She's struggling to find a job, so she lies on her resume. It also explores racism in hiring and the business industry. Her lies catch up to her when Danuwoa, the stunning, gorgeous Native Daddy IT guy is interested in her too. The forbidden aspect and sneaking around was so hot! Danuwoa is definitely a book bf!

Read this if you like romcoms, sneaking around, little white lies, and supporting BIPOC debut authors!

Absolutely a beautiful slow-burn romance with humor and family drama. I loved the character building, I loved the lessons of Amber, I even loved the corporate tension. For a debut author this story made my heart thump.

Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group for providing this ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!

I would recommend this book to those that are fans of work place romances that take time to highlight the injustices for minorities in the corporate world.

Overall I found this to be a very fun and easy to read book where we dive right in to Ember’s life as she’s trying to make it out of her low-paying and unsatisfying job at a local bowling alley. She makes a plan and executes it to a land a job as an accounting assistant, stretching the truth to help ensure her resume looks great. As she’s learning on the job she finds herself growing close to Danuwoa, despite the no dating coworkers policy. She quickly moves up in her job and finds it harder to manage the lies she has been telling to survive the corporate environment.

My biggest issue with this romance was it felt a bit too fast paced for me. With how quickly Ember’s life was changing, it became hard for me to feel the chemistry between her and Danuwoa and it became hard for me to connect with how she felt as she moved up in her job. The banter between the two of them did have me rooting for them but it did feel a bit like a “love at first sight” situation and that trope is not for me. Also, while I haven’t worked at a start-up company, I have worked in corporate environments so it was hard for me to grasp her getting the higher position in such a short time.

Despite that, I really enjoyed how the author handled the topics of navigating work environments that are white male dominated. Ember was a force to be reckoned with and learned to really find herself and her voice. It was empowering to watch moments where she stood up for herself and others rather than just trying to brush off racist or sexist comments. Her growth was neat to read, especially when it came to how the major conflict wrapped up.
