This was a great addition to the Merry Gentry series. I lot of court politics going on, but a good progression of the storyline too. We also discover some interesting backstory about Frost. I was debating between giving it 4 or 5 stars, I finally decided to go with 5!

Well, I broke down and read the most recent Merry Gentry novel. It had somewhat of a plot this time. The last four books have been "PWP?" ((Plot? What Plot?)) types of books, and there are only 6 in the series. Regardless, it was still brain candy; no redeeming value whatsoever. I should probably stay away from Merry Gentry right now. Far far away. She's not good for me.

After I took the recommendation of my little sister and tore through the Anita Blake books available and headed to the Library and grabbed the Merry Gentry books as well ...  I grabbed the first few books, hoping I would like them like I did with the Anita books.  Not really a Surprise; I LOVED THEM!  I tore through them in a few weeks and then read them as they became available until I finished them ALL!

Grab them they are great!

This book was packed full of new adventures.. but sadly, most of it wasn’t needed. Taranis attacking Merry really came out of nowhere. He wasn’t apart of the story at all and suddenly he’s a major player. It just doesn’t make sense. I enjoyed finding out that she is pregnant but the multiple fathers feels like a weird way to let her have her cake and eat it too- so, I basically feel like it was something pulled out of thin air to allow merry to keep all her lovers. Which, I know we all had our favorite but it would have been better, in terms of the story, had they stuck to the idea of “sidhe can only have one partner” that they used repeatedly before this point.

The rape of the seelie woman? Never goes anywhere. Taranis shows his ass, the police say they can’t just drop the charges even though they have witnesses who can vouch that the woman wasn’t raped- that it was an illusion. But they never move forward with it (honestly, I don’t even think it was mentioned again) and they never say “okay, charges are bullshit. It’s dropped”. So they just kinda... forget about it?

I really enjoy the stories but as I go on and think about it- there are lots of holes and things that just don’t jive well or make sense. Like creating a sithen in the mortal world... It just doesn’t make sense. &then for them to not use it- what was the purpose? Other than allowing taranis a way to attack... but he can travel through light, so why can’t he attack without needing to add sithens? Which is another thing that never goes anywhere...

A lot of plot threads are left to just dangle. The author didn’t do a good job of tying all the conflicts together/ending them out in a way that makes sense.

Every chapter is a moment in Merry's life, and each leads to next the. It was hard to put down. I wanted to read it all in one sitting. When I finished, I wanted there to be more.

I can't wait to get to the next book!

~*~Book Description~*~

I am Meredith Gentry, princess and heir apparent to the throne in the realm of faerie, onetime private investigator in the mortal world. To be crowned queen, I must first continue the royal bloodline and give birth to an heir of my own. If I fail, my aunt, Queen Andais, will be free to do what she most desires: install her twisted son, Cel, as monarch . . . and kill me.

My royal guards surround me, and my best loved–my Darkness and my Killing Frost–are always beside me, sworn to protect and make love to me. But still the threat grows greater. For despite all my carnal efforts, I remain childless, while the machinations of my sinister, sadistic Queen and her confederates remain tireless. So my bodyguards and I have slipped back into Los Angeles, hoping to outrun the gathering shadows of court intrigue. But even exile isn’t enough to escape the grasp of those with dark designs.

Now King Taranis, powerful and vainglorious ruler of faerie’s Seelie Court, has leveled accusations against my noble guards of a heinous crime–and has gone so far as to ask the mortal authorities to prosecute. If he succeeds, my men face extradition to faerie and the hideous penalties that await them there. But I know that Taranis’s charges are baseless, and I sense that his true target is me. He tried to kill me when I was a child. Now I fear his intentions are far more terrifying.

~*~My Review~*~

OMG! What a great Merry Gentry book!

Merry and her men are finally back in LA. But that doesn't stop the threats coming her way now does it? Hell-no. Freaking King is gone mad and wants Merry for his wife, the Queen is gone sadistic on one of the guards because she didn't talk with Merry first about rumors, Frost....dear lord, Frost....OMG!! I can't even handle it!

Such a great read. Some great news in this book! But of course it isn't just a simple thing...it's gotta be all complex and shit, lol.

As with most of LKH's work, I want to really to just spill the beans about everything that's happened, but for those that haven't read it yet, I really really really don't want to give away any spoilers.

Let's just say, very emotional book. Very good book. Very, well, just a great continuation of Merry's life.

Hamilton's best book in years - in either series. I really enjoyed this outing of Merry and her men. I was surprised that there was less sex and more plot. I hope Hamilton continues on this path.
