I preferred the 1881 set story of this Tete-beche novel. It’s an interesting concept I just wished I had liked both stories equally.

This book was definitely a very different kind of mystery. It’s an intervowen social drama (don’t try to guess along with detective cues in this one), where the connections that lead up to the deaths are the focus most of the time, rather than the actual manner of death or character development of our investigators.

As it says on the cover, you can approach it from both sides - However, I think I’d personally advise to start in the 1880s as I believe it is more vital to the 1930s story to know the 1880s one, which becomes very clear once you read the 1930s one (it’s complicated to talk about this book without giving the twists away).

A disadvantage of this might be however what I struggled with - the 1880s part drags a bit. And , furthermore, I feel like while the main plot gets resolved , a lot of questions remain in both stories that despite the promise of the novel do not find resolve despite reading both parts.

I rate this book high for the 1930s part, which was rather thrilling - Though, I’d advise a lot of patience.
