Great memoir on Alzheimer's, a complicated mother-daughter relationship, perinatal mood disorders... everything.
Loved the short chapters. Was very relatable in some sections, and very honest too. Really, REALLY loved this one!

Amazing I read in one sitting and will read again to savor each page - just happened to see this in library it grabbed my attention and it shall remain with me as well as the mother and child in the river - who shall survive? What choice to mak? Let go or no?
Wow! Just wow! If you have parents (ahem!), you should read this book. If you have parents and children, this book is really for you. And if you have any relationships in your life at all, you stand to gain from reading this stunning memoir by Maya Shanbhag Lang. Maya tells a tender, deeply personal, and moving story about what happens when we discover that someone we revere isn’t who we’ve always perceived them to be. She takes us through her journey from initial shock, disappointment, denial, and confusion to an astonishing level of acceptance and understanding. As she discovers her seemingly bottomless reservoir of inner strength, stamina, and fortitude, it’s hard not to be incredibly impressed and inspired.
This is one of those rare books that I couldn’t put it down. The chapters are short and the writing is exquisite—clear, insightful, and poignant. The story will hook you from the start with its initial picture of a deep bond followed by heartbreak. It will keep you turning the pages with the promise that Maya is going to get through it, and along the way, show us how we too can heal our own emotional baggage. You just know that through her pain, there’s going to be hope. What you don’t know is that through her struggle, she will also expand her capacity for self-love and appreciation.
Maya is a role model to all humanity as she demonstrates how we can all learn to love more deeply and fully no matter the obstacle. She is also a reminder that What We Carry is A LOT, but that we are all more capable than we know.
Thank you, Maya, for sharing your remarkable story with the world!

This simultaneously heart warming and heartbreaking story of a woman and her relationship with her mother. The strength of their bond in the first section in their ability to really talk. How when she called her mother it opened a magic doorway to be heard, even in the minutiae of life. Then the struggle that ensues with memory, depression, burnout, and childbirth all the while recognizing who she built her mother up to be may not be entirely true. However there’s so much love. A truly beautiful memoir!
