”A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead.”

I’m sure that everyone and their mother has heard of “Fourth Wing” at this point — it has completely flooded bookish socials & I am so glad that Rebecca Yarros is getting a lot of praise for this novel!

“Fourth Wing” had an incredibly strong premise. The romantasy plot combined with the inclusion of dragons / dragonriders was enough for me to add the novel to my evergrowing TBR — but the actual execution of the novel ended up falling a bit short for me.

There were an abundance of side characters in this novel — but I was unable to connect with most of them because they felt rather shallow / underdeveloped?

We met Rhiannon at the beginning of the novel — Violet forms a fast friendship with her — but the only things that we really know about Rhiannon are that she has an on again off again relationship with Tara (who I’m pretty sure said one sentence throughout the entire novel) & that her sister had a baby (therefore making Rhiannon an aunt). There was an opportunity to delve into her background a bit more / learn more about her character in general when Violet + Mira helped Rhiannon sneak off to see her family — but that moment ended up passing by in the blink of an eye.

The side character that I felt most connected to was Liam — but he (spoiler alert) ended up dying at the end of the novel…🫠

I do wish that the pacing of this novel was a bit different as well. There were moments that I wanted to see happen on page that were flash forwarded through (which was disappointing).

The world building was confusing at times (I’m still not quite sure about the order of command & all of the past battles that have occurred / their specific signifigance) and this novel was also marketed as an enemies-to-lovers romance — but I never felt as though Xaden + Violet were actual full fledged enemies at any point in the novel. Once Xaden started helping Violet train and giving her advice I just could not take Violet’s concerns about his character seriously because he never did anything to put her in harms way / warrant the fear of him hurting her.

I was also expecting the Violet + Brennan reunion at the end of the novel to be more…emotional? I suspected that he was alive — so that wasn’t too big of a surprise for me to grasp — but Brennan hadn’t seen his sister in six years (if I’m not mistaken) and he enters the scene as though it’s the gotcha moment of a Punk’d episode rather than an emotional reunion between two siblings that never thought that they would see each other ever again? It is possible that we’ll see the more emotional aspects of that reunion in “Iron Flame”, though (or at least that’s what I’m hoping for…)

With that being said — “Fourth Wing” promised dragon / dragonrider content & it certainly delivered

The dragons are such incredible creatures & I loved that we got a peek into their own governing system (it was so interesting)!

I am so happy that they are able to communicate with their riders — it helped me connect with them as characters / grow even more fond of them.

The only qualm that I have is that Tairn did not have a POV chapter (I expect that to be rectified in the future 😌).

I am looking forward to seeing how this series progresses (more Xaden + Tairn + Andarna content to look forward to hehe). ♡
