DID NOT FINISH: 30%

The main character was attracted to a guy that literall  wanted to kill her. Plus, he was a stalker and emotionally manipulated her. Way too toxic jfc.

While a decent read overall, Fourth Wing is full of info-dumping world-building. The author frequently throws in bouts of large chunks of information that are difficult to keep track of and follow. Definitely keep a pen and paper handy to take notes, you’ll need them later in the book. The book doesn’t get particularly interesting until the last third of the book, largely due to the late introduction of the dragons. The enemies to romance trope is strong and the characters are well-written and lovable, but Violet can tend towards a whiney personality that makes her more unlikeable as the story progresses. Overall, the book is largely over-hyped, and while worth a read, not worth spending full-price on.

This is complete cheese... YA Fiction styles with adult sexual content.
This is a huge mashup of a bunch of popular tropes; enemies to lovers, competitive survival/hunger games, magic school, magically branded, kid of the boss/warleader, with teen sensibilities but college age soldiers.

Spicy and silly with DRAGONS! .. and secrets, and libraries. telepathy, spirit bonds and a mildly unbelievable political premise.

This one gets bonus points for ethnic diversity and Disability rep.. the main character has joint hypermobility and chronic pain, and one of her friends is deaf-mute and uses sign language. This is a great illustration of people using various accommodations to allow people with different needs to meet their potential. The sexual content focuses on mindful and explicit consent.

The last part of the book annoyed me because BLAH battles.. I'm not really interested in battles.

Predictable, immature, diversity only for the sake of diversity and mind-numbingly bad. Quick read though.

Rebecca Yarros really sat down and wrote a book which includes every possible trope ever. Manic pixie dream girl, not like the other girls, i’m no longer attracted to my best friend but i am attracted to the guy who wants to kill me. You’ll find all these and more. Also the ending is just the hunger games: catching fire. (Rating: 1.5)

I hated it a lot less the second time around. Long story short: the premise is awesome but the writing SUCKS. (Rating: 3)

Honestly, this was one of the worst books I’ve read in my entire life. The more I reflect upon it, the more I am assured of its negligible merit as a work of literature. The characters are deeply flawed and each characterized by selfishness; there is no true heroism on display on any page of the novel. Moreover, the author seems to laud contemptible behavior such as deception, brutality, lust, etc. The romance between Violet and her enemy-turned-lover is extremely toxic, and all the constant descriptions of how Violet responds physically to simply being in the same room as him are overdone and gross. The author really demonstrated the great number of ways to describe how Violet’s “lower abdomen went warm at the sight of his bare chest.” The open-door sex scene is gratuitous and obscene, contributing nothing to the plot or character development.
There is zero substance to the story - it is merely a rehashed version of Divergent, or a variety of other fantasy plot lines. There was potential to develop Violet’s relationships with her dragons - an interesting facet of the story being that she has two dragons - but all for naught since Violet hardly ever speaks with her dragons.
I wanted to like this book, but was truly shocked at how much I hated it. The constant use of foul language was the “cherry-on-top” of this garbage read. If I could “unread” it, I would, and I’m cleansing my palate now with some good, old Jane Austen.
