As a concept I've always found it fascinating when somebody decides to write a Doctor-lite episode, where the main character is surprisingly NOT the title character; if you want to write for a hero, why would you want to come from the point of view of the mundy? (of course this trope is a lot older than Doctor Who, but that's what usually comes to mind when I think of setups like this). As we find out from this surprisingly eloquent hick, her perspective, full of awe and a little indignation being the companion of someone so powerful but doesn't do enough in her eyes, is the catalyst to spur a grieving & aimless Kara Zor-El into doing stuff besides drowning her sorrows.
Farmgirl on a distant planet wants revenge against the man who slew her father, who coincidentally also shot Krypto the super-dog when both him & Supergirl were vulnerable. So these two ladies must traverse the vast expanse of stars & planets (and gross interstellar rest-stops) on the trail of an honorless d-bag. And of course along the way, they right wrongs, uncover conspiracies, help victims grieve, beat up space pirates, and survive prison planets (WTF IS A GREEN SUN?!). And when the time comes to confront their prey, will goodness win out or will they give in to their dark sides?
The narrative sweeps and gives epic descriptions, the art is great & cosmic, and the two constant characters are surprisingly human. But I suppose that IS the graphic novel's greatest strength: it's all so familiar. Each chapter gives a story that emits the strongest deja vu despite the sci-fi settings. But rather than play cliches out, the two women show they are kickass, they can be a mess, AND they can still be kind, which breathes the new life into the book to stop it from falling into "seen it before, bored now."
Rumor mill states that James Gunn will be basing his upcoming Supergirl movie off of this one and I can see why as it is absolute cinema. I will wait with bated breath to see if such a spectacular story will be done justice.
