This book delights the part of me that loves obsessive people. However it trickles downhill into a pastiche of a journalist whiling his time looking for a years worth of stories about racist people and the Bonnie Blue Flag.
While I did not finish the whole book, it was well written. I found it interesting and disturbing at times. It really makes me think. When does a hobby or anything for that matter cross the line into obsession?
A fascinating and interesting exploration of the Confederacy and why it continues to capture the imagination and stir up controversy 150 years later. Check out my blog post that more thoroughly explores the book and my reaction.
Easily an all-time favorite book of mine. Horwitz spends time with Civil War reenactors on the Southern side - a great look at reenactment culture and even some of the Southern "the South will rise again" types with a really keen eye for what makes them really fascinating.
I can't say enough good things about this book, to be honest. Tickles that social psychology nerve just as well as the historian side, and gives some attention to a often-misunderstood and maligned group of people with an offbeat interest.

A really interesting book about the South. I wish it had been a little more clear why he decided to investigate this, but other than that, the book was really captivating.

Horwitz writes in a very engaging way. This helped me process my experience growing up in Virginia.
