Although I'm a huge fan of Rina Kent, I won't lie that I was a bit skptical if this would keep me interested just as much as her previous works, especially since the ‘father's best friend’ trope is so over-used that I've become immune to their charm.
I kissed my father’s best friend and it kind of didn’t go well.
Not only because he’s eighteen years older than me—but he also didn’t like it.
Not one bit.
The thing I loved about Empire Of Desire was that it was so inclusive, giving Kingsley a chance to show his point of view alongside Gwyneth & Nathaniel. Apart from that, we are treated to the author's beautiful play with her words, managing to captivate you to read this in a go. But the only thing which disturbed me was Gwyneth grinding against Alex and Chris while she asserts over and over again that she didn't like Nathaniel hanging out with Aspen. Hypocrite much?
“You’re well and truly fucked, baby girl.”
Another instance which is quite unlike all other RK books was that I could see the plot twist coming from a mile away. I got a hint about the climax at around 60% mark which was a bit disappointing not gonna lie. :/

We love a spicy age gap romance
- age gap
- dad’s best friend
- marriage of convenience
- workplace
- possessive alphahole
This was good and I liked how Rina did the spicy age gap and handled the taboo elements of them figuring out their relationship. I loved that she was the one who was into him and for a long time, he kept saying no to her.
That said, she did write a very immature 20 year old FMC. To the point where her internal thoughts and dialogue were so naive and childish that she annoyed me. That and the female narrator played up the immaturity had me not loving the female character as much as Nate.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
