I’m convinced I read a different book thank everyone else, after reading the reviews. The “magical realism” the book is written in does not make up for the lack of plot, in my opinion.
I was in no way attached to Binnie’s art of lacquered candy and found objects because it honestly didn’t seem like she was even attached to it. I didn’t care about her dreams of creating because she never created anything. She never did anything in 3/4 of the book. When she did actually do something, it was to make poor choices and blame everyone else for her problems.
No character was likable. Her art was boring. And I can’t just read a book for the “beautiful prose” if everything makes me want to rip my eyes out. Exhausting.

I wrote this book, so I'm biased, but I happen to think it's quite good!
