Great book. Very different from the movies. Was pretty slow until about half way through then the rest if the book flew by.
Just finished this book for the second time, I really truly LOVE this book!
This is my favorite kind of book to read; a book with a story so wonderful I wish it could go on and on. For the longest time I was so skeptical about reading J.R.R. Tolkein's book because "I didn't like fantasy." After reading The Hobbit, I've realized his work is pure genius. Now on to The Lord of the Rings

I had high hopes for this book after breezing through the LOTR series. A lot of the plot of this book was alluded to in the LOTR and I was so excited to read more details about Bilbo’s adventures. I felt pretty disappointed though and almost wish I had either read this first or maybe just skipped it altogether as I think what I was imaging was better than what actually came to pass. An example of this is Bilbo’s mithril armor that he passes down to Frodo. He mentions wistfully that he was gifted it from Thorin and I thought it was this major relationship building moment but it wasn’t. It was a “thanks for getting us in the cave” gift. In fact there wasn’t a whole lot of character or plot development (or at least compared to LOTR…). I never felt any true connection between Bilbo and any of the dwarves nor did I really care about any of them as characters. I also didn’t feel any buy in for Bilbo or myself as to why we should care about the cause/reason for this big adventure. I don’t know or care about the dwarves enough to care that they should kill Smaug and take back their mountain and it felt random and inauthentic that Bilbo so wholeheartedly participated in this adventure based off so little relationship development. Frodo went on his adventure unwillingly because he wanted to protect the Shire he loved so much. I honestly can’t say why Bilbo went on this adventure besides to prove himself which also felt kind of uncharacteristic from what little development there was in the beginning. I also felt like there was such random plot resolution like anytime there seemed to be no way the dwarves/Bilbo could make it through either Gandalf or the Eagles would pop up and suddenly everything is fixed!!!
This book also brought up more questions than answers in terms of the lore and the logic around the ring — perhaps because this was written first but why didn’t Gollum follow Bilbo out to get the Ring back since he clearly is so adept and well-traveled in LOTR? Why couldn’t Sauron feel Bilbo and take back the Ring if he’s just liberally wearing this thing and telling people about it?
This book is 3 stars because I still enjoyed parts of it like the parts with Gollum but it took effort to make it through this much shorter book and I’m not sure I’d ever read this one again.
