I’m a huge Kate Atkinson fan, and I loved 3/4 of this one- but the ending fizzled for me. The ending literally came out of nowhere. It’s like she got tired of writing and just decided “let’s kill them all off.” WTH? The scene where Nellie shoots A? I could almost look past that (even though it came out of nowhere) but then to just run down the list of characters? To leave Nivin and Ms Nelling “frozen in space” for all time was literally a lazy cop out. Looking back at that point made me realize how many other parts of the novel were just left unwoven. Why was Quinn killed? Who killed him? Who was the mummy? How did Ramsey steal the book so easily? How did Oakes get caught? . So much of the last 1/3 of the book just felt completely lazy. It was disappointing. I gave the book 4 starts for the first 2/3 which I really enjoyed!!
Moderate: Violence
Minor: Homophobia
