I enjoyed the writing and the characters, but I don't know if I'm enjoying the set up that much. I may revisit this later though!

This was cute for sure. A lesbian fake dating romance, both black, one's fat while the other is butch and afro-latine. Love the layers of intersectional representation in this book.

The only thing I'll ding this on is I think the concept of the reality show that is the driving force for this plot is a little mean spirited and I can't really understand why D'Vaughn signed up for it. It seems really out of character for her, like the choice had to be made to have the plot at all but it does not align with her other choices/overall character. Like she's a meek, family oriented person who has so much reverence for her mother and here she is signing up for a show that requires constant lying to and inevitably at the end a chance to humiliate your family on national tv. Higgins tries to write around that with a throw away line about the families being out of the loop during the actual filming but once the farce is revealed being allowed to opt out of being aired and having scenes with them involved edited around but like that's so unrealistic bb.

I liked the natural evolution of their relationship between the romantic leads, D'vaughn & Kris. I am also so incredibly grateful for a masc being the romantic lead and desired character in the novel. Almost all of the Sapphic fiction you find is femme4femme. And it was so refreshing and changing to read a butch lead. As a masc myself this meant a lot to me. It would have been better masc4masc but I'll take what I can get.

So unique and funny. I loved the set up-a reality show that gives two strangers 6 weeks to convince their families they are in love and getting married. And they have to plan a wedding at the same time. Shenanigans ensue and LGBTQ+ vibes abound. I get the hype!

Contemporary romance is simply not for me right now. On top of that, this book features my worst nightmare: people I hardly know witnessing me in vulnerable states and getting overfamiliar with me as a result. Also cannot suspend my disbelief that someone would WANT to come out on reality television, that’s just soooo outside my scope.
