This was a charming book of poetry about night dwelling animals with beautiful accompanying illustrations and factual information. I loved the quiet verse, and especially the free verse poems that were made in the shape of the animal they were describing.

Begs to be read aloud! Could be used as a part of a poetry unit. I especially like The Moon's Lament - an ubi sunt and Night Spider's Advice.

"use what you have
Rest when you need to.
Dawn will come soon enough"

Love it!

Audience: K-5th graders (the younger ages could enjoy the book by reading it with an adult and the older ages could read it themselves) who like rhyming and poetry or are interested in learning more about nature

Appeal: Beautiful and rhythmic poetry is accompanied by interesting and informative paragraphs about nocturnal creatures such as porcupines, bats, crickets and even trees and mushrooms. This would be a wonderful book to read aloud and could spark lots of discussion about when kids have seen these things in their own lives.

Beautiful book of nature poetry for children, with lovely illustrations throughout. I will suggest picking up the hard copy book for this one- I first discovered it through a library digital app (in this case Overdrive), and while the poems were still readable, the formatting had been fairly butchered for the digital version. Worth finding the hard copy of!

I love a "kid's book" that turns out to be charming for grownups too. This collection of poetry about night creatures, along with the gorgeous illustrations, is a lovely quick read for any age.

Each poem is simply depicting night life. The illustrations are vivid, and each has a caption explaining some facts about the creature or plant being featured. My personal favorite was the oak tree. I felt a stir in my bosom as I recalled the big oak tree that lived outside the house I grew up in.

Dark Emperor & Other Poems of the Night is a remarkable book of poetry featuring night creatures, animals and plants alike. Each poem is accompanied by factual information about the nighttime creature it features, allowing for not only a poetic experience, but a scientific one as well. This combination of literacy with science makes for a satisfyingly informational reading experience.

One aspect that makes this work outstanding is not only does one read about nighttime creatures, but one can actually feel the night through these poems. The mood of the work is dark, quiet, and mystical. The words of these poems work in such a way that the reader becomes one with the creatures and the night. These poems are beautiful, and they find beauty in the nighttime creatures as well. The addition of the nonfiction text on the accompanying pages makes this a well-rounded work and an excellent addition to any classroom library. What an intriguing way to introduce creatures of the night to children through poetry and then back up the poems with factual information.

This work would just not be the same without the addition of its stunning illustrations. The dark lines and colors of the illustrations complement the mood and substance of the poems so perfectly. Just as one has to search with the eye for the nighttime creatures in real-life, so does one with these beautifully deep and dark illustrations.

These magical poems definitely have a place as a read-aloud, for these beautiful words need a voice. Children would also enjoy poring over the illustrations and mystical words. This Newbery Honor book is an essential purchase as it deserves a place in every library.

Dark Emperors & Other Poems of the Night is a wonderfully written book that was written by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Rick Allen. In this book, Sidman expertly portrays the night life through the use of poetry and a detailed description of the poems throughout the book. She is able to capture the beauty of the many different creatures of the nocturnal world including different animals, plants and the moon.

This book is engaging because it explores something that children are usually fearful of. Many children are afraid of the night and this book is able to capture the beauty of the night animals in a way that many people would not be able to because of the fear of it. Sidman and Allen work cleverly together to create poems and illustrations that portray the night life experience in such a way that it sounds fascinating, not scary. I would highly recommend reading this book to children because it takes the edge off of the fear of the night life.
