I really enjoyed these books. I found myself singing out loud just so I can figure out how to make Katz’s lyrics fit with the original songs. I love the idea of singing these silly songs with students to the tune of classics. I think it gives a great opportunity to talk about the classic songs, where they came from, and their meaning. Then, the silly songs give you a chance to look at rhyming, rhythm, other poetic elements, and humor. I think it would be a fun activity to have students then emulate Alan Katz’s songs by writing their own fun songs.

The songs in this collection may indeed be silly, but they capture the feelings and frustrations of children in all-too-familiar circumstances. Smothering relatives, eating one's vegetables, sibling rivalry, taking medicine, boredom, and the tendency to lose belongings are just some of the topics of this balloon-bouquet of poems.

The author reinvents classic sing-along songs with outrageous new lyrics to delight both adult and child. The rhymes are clever and are skillfully woven into familiar tunes; two of the best are "Tiny Baby Brother" (as sung to "Itsy Bitsy Spider") and "He's Got the Whole Beach in His Pants". The cartoon illustrations are just as outlandish as the lyrics, and the combination results in poems that will easily withstand the repetition they are sure to enjoy.

I love singing this book with my son. I didn't know every song but the ones I didn't I just made up. The pictures were cute and the new lyrics were hysterical. It's a great way to end the night.
