Supremely satisfying Victorian mystery with just a hint of horror. The odd couple detective partners are well-developed, the mystery is twisty with clever plotting and there is just enough humor to offset the bloody violence. I look forward to solving more cases with Frey and McGray.

Fun murder- mystery crime novel set in Victorian Scotland with memorable characters, a hilarious crime-fighting duo and an unusual killer.

For a debut novel, I'm impressed. Interesting characters with just enough back-story to get the gist of who they are (although if the Prologue wasn't included, there would have been more mystery), but not so much that it weighs the story down. I've been reading more mystery/detective type books lately and this one kept me guessing. Every time I thought I figured out who the murderer was, that character died!

The characters of McGray & Frey are such opposites in the way they live, their outlooks on life and the Scottish/English thing that naturally they are going to be like oil & water, but the sniping between the two helps to make them work well as a pair & personally, it makes me laugh. I will say that it's a good thing I've been reading more set in Scotland, because if I hadn't, I would have been lost with some of the speech (thank heavens for Diana Gabaldon & her Outlander series!).

I picked this up because I got the 2nd book before realizing this was a series, but now that I know the main characters, I am prepared to go into the next one with gusto.

I liked the story, I liked the setting, and I liked a majority of the characters. I just couldn't stand (at points) Inspector Frey. He's so whiny!! He comes off as prissy and there are times I just want to tell him to suck it up and do his job. But it's overall a good story and I look forward to reading more.

I had high hopes for this series, but was largely disappointed. The plot was intriguing enough, but I disliked almost all of the characters. The most likeable characters were very minor ones, at least one of whom promptly became a victim. And virtually all of the female characters were venal, immoral or just bitchy. Not a lot to like here.
The two male lead characters were arrogant, vulgar, rude and unpleasant, to one another and to everyone else they met. Understanding their reasons for being so unpleasant all of the time did nothing to improve my perception of them. And I am loathe to invest more time in them.
Sadly, I bought two other volumes in this series when I purchased this volume. I'll feel obligated to read them. My reviews may be brief.
